Scheme Details:
N52 Mullingar Bypass Scheme
Scheme Description
The N52 is a National Secondary Route in the National roads network providing a strategic link from Dundalk in the north east to Nenagh, near Limerick, in the south west. It intersects the national primary road network and provides a cross country connection between the country's main road arteries by linking the N1 at Dundalk, the N2 at Ardee, the N3 at Kells, the N4 at Mullingar, the N6 at Kilbeggan and south through Tullamore and Birr terminating on the N7 at Nenagh.
The upgrading of the N52 south of Mullingar forms part of the strategic National Roads Policy to improve the primary and secondary road networks as stated in the National Development Plan and in the National Roads Needs Study carried out by the National Roads Authority in 1998.
The scheme involved the construction of 4.9km of single carriageway and consists of two elements: a 3.2km north-south connection between the N52 Mullingar – Belvedere scheme and an existing roundabout in Marlinstown, located off the existing N4 Mullingar bypass; and a 1.7km east–west link to the existing N52 in Lynn, south of Mullingar.
The scheme incorporates four roundabouts and two principal structures – one crossing over the main Dublin to Sligo railway line and one crossing the Royal Canal.
Westmeath County Council entered into a contract for the construction of the new bypass with Noel Regan and Sons Ltd. in November 2004, and the project was opened to traffic on the 4th of August 2006 by Junior Minister Pat 'The Cope' Gallagher T.D.
Scheme Location
The route of the new bypass commences at the existing roundabout in Marlinstown, which is located just off the existing N4 Mullingar bypass. The route runs south for approximately 1.5 km through farmland, alongside the newly constructed IDA Technological Park before being bridged across the railway and the Royal Canal.
The road then continues for approximately 2km in a south-easterly direction to form a roundabout at Tullaniskey, which will form the tie-in with the Mullingar-Belvedere scheme upon its opening. The bypass continues east from this roundabout, forming a staggered junction at the R400 Rochfortbridge road and finally terminates with a further roundabout on the existing N52 at Lynn.
