Scheme Description
The N52 Tullamore Bypass is being project managed jointly by Offaly County Council and the Westmeath County Council National Roads Design Office. The scheme forms part of the N52 national secondary route, linking Dundalk in the north east with Limerick in the south west.
The N52 Tullamore Bypass involves the construction of approximately 14 kilometres of standard single carriageway and wide single carriageway road types. The proposed bypass will depart from the existing N52 at Gormagh Bridge, approximately 3km north of Tullamore, and will rejoin the existing N52 in the townland of Heath, 6km south west of Tullamore town. The proposed development also involves the construction of 9 major structures, consisting of 6 underbridges, 2 accommodation works underpasses and 1 overbridge.

N52 Tullamore Bypass Road Opening

On 23rd October the Taoiseach, Mr. Brian Cowen TD opened the new N52 Tullamore Bypass. The scheme involved the design and construction of approximately 11.5km of standard single carriageway and 2.5km of wide single carriageway for a total of 14km. The route commences at the existing N52 in the townland of Heath and heads in a north-easterly direction crossing the Clodiagh River, then continuing north to cross the Tullamore River before proceeding in a northerly direction through the Ardan Hills and terminates in Gormagh, County Offaly. The scheme involved the construction of seven roundabout junctions, three river crossings, a canal crossing and one railway crossing.
Compulsory Purchase Order and Environmental Impact Statement
The EIS was published by Offaly County Council in November of 2004.
The Oral hearing for the scheme was held in March 2005, and approval to progress the development of the N52 Tullamore Bypass was given by An Bord Pleanala in June 2005.
